Market Uptake of Renewable Energies for Heating and Cooling Final International Conference of the EU H2020 Projects BioVill and CoolHeating

Munich, 12.12.2018 The 28th of November 2018 stood in the sign of the EU approach of fostering the market uptake of renewable energies for heating and cooling in South-Eastern European countries. The European Commission released its strategic long-term vision for a prosperous, modern, competitive and climate-neutral economy by 2050. The same day, the joint final international conference of the 3 years-projects BioVill (http://www.biovill.eu/) and CoolHeating (http://www.coolheating.eu), funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme to support the establishment of bioenergy villages and small modular renewable heating and cooling grids, was held at the Manos Conference Centre in Brussels, Belgium.

More than eighty representatives of the EU commission, national and international partner organisations, companies involved in renewable energy as well as district heating and cooling investments and the project consortia took the excellent opportunity to meet renewable energy experts, to talk to possible investors, and to discuss the project results and the implementation progress of renewable bioenergy villages and sustainable district heating and cooling systems in Europe. New contacts were created and business opportunities promoted. Finally, the participants gained an insight on how both EU projects contribute to accelerate the clean energy transition in South-East Europe. For example, the BioVill project has initiated the implementation of the bioenergy village approach up to the investment stage in 7 villages in the partner countries. And CoolHeating succeeded to initiate five small district heating grids in the target communities of the project.

Besides interesting presentations of the EU commission and the project partners, a highlight of the event was the vivid panel discussion, which included the audience’s perspectives, summarized the impacts of both projects on the market uptake of renewable energies for heating and cooling in Europe and accentuated the role of cities, municipalities and local communities in the energy transition processes.

To the delight of the organizers, the participants confirmed at the end that the conference objective - providing a platform for the presentation and discussion of the projects results to the political, economic and scientific communities in Europe - was successfully achieved. Alliances between the public and the private sector were endorsed, the main project outcomes were assessed and best practice examples as well as innovative value chains for the sustainable use of renewable energies in local district heating and cooling grids were presented. Finally, also the idea of jointly organising the final conference for both projects was very much welcomed. The exchange amongst the representatives of public authorities and utility companies, national and regional decision makers and the research community paved the way to an expanding network within the renewable energy community for district heating and cooling. All BioVill and CoolHeating partners highlighted that they will continue with the engaged work and support the fostering of renewable energy approaches in South-Eastern Europe.

Although various information materials on technologies for small modular renewable heating and cooling systems exist, there was a need to create this up-to-date handbook that is accessible for free in various languages (English, Bosnian, Croatian, Macedonian, Serbian, Slovenian).

In many of the CoolHeating target countries, there is lack of such information in national language. The handbook provides an overview of both, technical and non-technical aspects.

Best practice examples need to be replicated on a larger scale, therefore a map on the best practices was elaborated in the framework of the CoolHeating project.

Did you know that the heat currently being wasted in Europe could heat all of our buildings if it was collected in smart district heating grids?

Today, 40% of the energy consumed in Europe is for heating. All this energy can become sustainable through modern district heating systems collecting waste heat from power plants and industry, and working at low temperatures which minimizes the heat loss and integrates more sources of renewable energy.

The video describes how Europe could transform its heating supply to be low-carbon and cost-effective whilst maintaining security of supply.

The video is financed by the 4DH Research Centre and Blue Planet Innovation together with Danish district heating system and component manufacturers Danfoss, Kamstrup, and LOGSTOR, and Danish district heating suppliers Aarhus Affaldvarme and Aalborg Forsyning.

At perfect sunny weather conditions, international guests participated in a study tour on solar thermal and biomass district heating systems in Denmark on 21-23 September. 27 participants from Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Slovenia, Austria, Germany and Denmark saw in best practice examples how heat from the sunlight and biomass can provide sustainable energy for the operation of district heating grids. The study tour was organised in the framework of the CoolHeating project, which is supported by the Horizon 2020 programme of the European Union. CoolHeating, coordinated by WIP Renewable Energies, Germany, promotes the set-up of small modular renewable heating and cooling grids in South-Eastern Europe up to the investment stage. PlanEnergi from Denmark is specialised in such heating grids and organised the study tour.

28.01.2016: CoolHeating consortium visits three good practice examples in Germany

On the occasion of the CoolHeating Kick-off-Meeting, the consortium visited three good practice examples in Germany: a low-temperature micro heating grid, a district heating grid with solar and seasonal heat storage, and finally a biomass based (biogas, woodchips) micro-heating grid.

Site visit 1: Solar District Heating “Am Ackermannbogen”

The district heating of 320 households with 45% solar thermal energy and a seasonal storage is realized in the solar disrtict heating project “Am Ackermannbogen” in Munich. The operator of the system explained how the system works which includes solar collectors on multi-apartment houses, a seasonal storage system and a heat pump. The system is furthermore connected to the district heating system of Munich in order to supply heat in case the storage is discharged.
More information (in German):
https://www.energieatlas.bayern.de/thema_sonne/solarthermie/praxisbeispiele/details,197.html

Site visit 2: Low temperature district heating “Dollnstein”
Recently, an innovative low-temperature district heating grid was set-up in Dollnstein. The system supplies 40 households and public buildings with thermal energy. The system includes solar collectors, a heat pump, a LPG CHP unit and heat storage systems. The system is innovative as the temperature level of the heated water in the system in summer is rahter low (20-25°C)
More information (in German):
https://www.energieatlas.bayern.de/kommunen/praxisbeispiele/details,583.html

Site visit 3: District heating with biomass
The agricultural biogas plant of Ulrich Bader in Sochenberg uses surplus heat in a small district heating system to supply about 80 households. For peak load, a woodchip boiler and an oil boiler is available. Surplus heat in summer is used to dry woodchips.

Besides the knowledge exchange between the CoolHeating partners and the plant operators, potential future cooperation opportunities were investigated.
